Best Bets

Very rarely do I agree with many of Mr. Rockingham's "Best Bets", but this week I think he got it bang on. Graham and I made the same choice in the case of Junior Boys Tuesday at Pepper Jack Cafe. One show I forgot to mention earlier was the fantastic Wednesday night line-up at the Casbah.

In the main room, Julie Fader (of Great Lake Swimmers/Sarah Harmer Band fame) is performing a solo show with friends Brian Borcherdt and locals Huron opening up. The boys in Huron will also be backing her as a band. Huron will be releasing a fantastic debut album in the near future. I've had the privelege of listening to the CD throughout its conception, and believe me. It's good. Last year, I raved on about Aaron Goldstein and the band Jawbone. Well, Huron is the same band, just with a new name. They recorded this little southern rock explosion at Vibewrangler studio with respected Canadian producer Ian Blurton.

In the Casbah Lounge that same night,  Hollerado will be finishing up their residency tour. This tour kept the band busy throughout the month of February, performing 7 days a week, with each night dedicated to a different city. Their schedule looked something like this:
Sunday- Boston
Monday- New York City
Tuesday- Lacolle
Wednesday- Hamilton
Thursday- Toronto
Friday- Ottawa
Saturday- Montreal

Sure, bands tour all the time-- but normally they get days off. The gentlemen in Hollerado kept very busy this month and are saying good-bye to Wednesday nights in Hamilton with a bang. Opening up this show will be local singer/songwriter Christopher Eckart, Toronto's Hue, and Pick a Piper featuring members of Caribou. Week three left the band almost in shambles. Let's hope the road was nicer to them in the home stretch.

Down By The Point Winter Closer

Hamilton's second-favourite homegrown DIY label (c'mon Sonic Unyon will always come first) DOWN BY THE POINT RECORDS have created a collective. Down By The Point is a collective similar to that found in Toronto's Broken Social Scene or even Hamilton's defunct Put On Your Drinking Cap label.  The ladies and gents involved in Hamilton's music scene needed somewhere to expose their music and tinkerings- Down By The Point was the answer.

Saturday March 7th, the bands supported by Down By The Point Records will be saying "sayonara!" to winter at the Casbah. Cam Malcolm & The Owls, The Abbreviations, Cowlick, and Matt Paxton & The Mountain will be performing a giant winter love-in. A wha? A GIANT WINTER LOVE IN. Expect shared guitars, sets of drums, multi-vocalists and daisies.

Junior Boys "Begone Dull Care": March 24th 2009

On February 24th, local electro-dance musicians "JUNIOR BOYS" will be performing at Pepper Jack Cafe. Yes, that's a Tuesday. No that shouldn't stop you from attending. This will be the group's first hometown performance since April 2008. Junior Boys don't get around to playing Hamilton that often because they're busy touring the world with their Pitchfork-approved dance duo act. Junior Boys' next big performance will be at Coachella Festival in Indio, California alongside headlining acts Paul McCartney, Amy Winehouse and the Cure. Other Canadian acts at the festival include Toronto's MSTRKRFT, Crystal Castles, Los Campesinos and Billy Talent.

Up-2junior

The follow-up album to Junior Boys' 2006 critically acclaimed So This Is Goodbye, will be released in March 2009. The title: Begone Dull Care. The duo has already proved themselves as worthy of media-recognition, now it's your turn to pay attention to them.

32. Canadian Recording of the Year by Peoples Choice (Sales over 10,000 units)

I'm dumbfounded with this list. I know these types of things are all opinion-based, but this list reflects a very small part of the Hamilton music scene. Upon first glance, I wondered "How many times can Luke Doucet, Kathleen Edwards and Daniel Lanois be nominated?" Luke Doucet, a four-time nominee, only recently joined the 905 area code. He still claims his Toronto status on his Myspace.com account. Kathleen Edwards- born in Ottawa. These artists in particular have made their way into the Toronto alternative country and adult alternative scenes.

Another artist that surprised me on the list was current up-and-comers Holy F*ck. Their local connection comes in the form of member Graham Walsh (if there's more of a connection, please correct me). A band like Holy F*ck isn't directly related back to Hamilton. It takes some digging to even figure out that there is an ex-Hamilton/Burlington resident in the band. People hear Holy F*ck, they think Toronto- where a majority of their members are from. Their success is almost parallel to that of 2006 HMA nominees and Hamilton natives, Junior Boys. Both Holy F*ck and Junior Boys have found moderate success with a younger crowd, listeners of CBC Radio 3 and European fans.

A local group receiving a few nods from the Toronto scene is The Arkells. They've been signed to a label, and are reaching levels of success above many on the HMA list. Though some members of the band are from Toronto and the GTA, they are still a Hamilton-based band (perhaps even more so than Doucet and Edwards). So why have they been overlooked by the Hamilton Music Awards? Perhaps because the band's album isn't released until October 28th, 2008.

If the criteria for making the nominations list claims the artist must release a CD in the current year, that narrows the list of those eligible. There are few artists on this list that actually reflect what is going on in the Hamilton Scene currently. I was pleasantly surprised to see acts such as Cowlick, The Dirty Nil, Thomas Wilson and Sarah Stewart-Kroeker (also known as the Wilson Family Forgery and not to be confused with Tom Wilson of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings fame), Rackula, Dean Lickyer and Young Rival on the nomination list. These artists live in Hamilton, perform in Hamilton and are proud of Hamilton.

Many artists/bands that should be on the list, aren't. I won't list those that I think should have made it, but there are many I believe are missing. Instead of the many repeat nominations, perhaps someone else could have had a chance. The list is hard to believe at times, with one of the nominees even surprised with their nomination.

What do you think? Who should have been nominated, that wasn't? Who are you rooting for?

September 20, 2008

I'm terribly sorry. I know I've been negligent all summer and for the better part of September so far, but starting the twelfth grade and keeping up with indie rock is hard work.

Forgive me, I'll be back!

Arkells

A couple months ago I wrote this article on the "ARKELLS" for the paper:
http://www.thehamiltonspectator.com/Entertainment/article/363036

Since then, local gentlemen the Arkells have been hard at work. New album coming out, hopefully in theKells_2 fall. The reason I'm writing about them again is because I'm listening to them on the Toronto based radio station EDGE 102.1 FM. They just finished up an interview, and now they're performing live. The broadcast is live from the pre-Edgefest party. Tomorrow they're opening up the main stage at the station's mega music festival, EDGEFEST. Hearing them on the radio giving an interview and performing instills a local pride within. Knowing that a little band we've watched grow from the "Charlemagne" days  had what it takes to become even just a little bit bigger, proves that talent and lots of hard work eventually pay off.  Next week they're heading out west to open for the Black Crowes.

At the risk of repeating myself, I'll let you read the original article to get the details.

Congrats Arkells!

The Millions Too Many

It was a moment. And it happened. And we were there. A Northern Chorus played their last chords.

"I'm a bit verklempt" joked Stu Livingstone, co-founding member of the band. It may have been Pete Hall, the other half of the founding members, who knows. Other than voices, distinguishing anything onstage was tricky. The room was so full, the stage was hard to see.

They were one of those bands. All about atmosphere. It was a combination of layered voices, cellos, guitars, drums and a violin that set a breathtaking stage. It's a shame it took their demise to bring fans, friends and family together to share the night.

AncThe band began their set with the title track from The Millions Too Many. In a recent conversation with Pete Hall, he explained the motivation behind the label. "The Millions too many is basically a comment on just how huge the music world is now," says Hall, "There are so many bands touring and putting out records that it's very difficult to find your own place."

From that point on there was no turning back. Attempting to remember specifically what songs were played is next to impossible. A good chunk of every A Northern Chorus release was performed. After a solid hour of music, the crowd was still going strong as was the the band. Few, if any, audience members had left their spot on the floor. The night was almost over, as the clock struck 1:30 a.m. This was the moment of the first "break". You knew they'd come back, but you still cheered them on. After a few sips the band collected themselves again and played four more songs or so. Quarter to two, they're done for good this time, right? Right? Tears were shed. Eight years of solid music and touring about to come to an end.
One more song. Skeleton Keys.
"You know this kind of thing has never happened before. You know this kind of thing will never happen again."

And it was over.

Now, if Graham Rockingham can give his best bets for the week, as his apprentice I think I can do the same.

Best of the Fest

Friday night be sure to check out Matthew Boughner starting at 6 p.m. He performed at the New Harbour Series earlier in the month. Experimental instrument mash-ups. Sailboats are White are worth sticking for. Word has it, this could be their last show. They've been a staple in the Hamilton music scene for as long as I can remember.

Saturday night, starting at 6 p.m., direct your attention to Fire:End:Water, The Bird Rentals, and Slow Hand Motëm. 'Nuff said.

Sunday night it's all about Mark Raymond and Electroluminescent at 5 p.m.

Tuesday brings us the Canada Day of epic proportions. At 1:30 p.m, Terra Lightfoot takes the stage. After Terra, the infamous Matt Jelly follow by possibly some of the youngest performers at the festival The Abbreviations. Don't let their age fool you, though. They're worth a listen or two. Following that set will be Espanola. As previously noted, the band Jawbone was supposed to perform. A member will be out of town and as a result one half of Jawbone will perform under the moniker Espanola (see previous post).

That's a very quick overview of the weekend. Come on down to Gage Park, and enjoy.
See you at the NME Stage!

New Harbours Music Series

Picture this. You're taking a stroll down James North one Friday night, enjoying the monthly Art Crawl, when suddenly you hear noise coming out of Christ's Church Cathedral (at 252 James N). I know I'd be interested in finding out what the heck was going on. And I was. And I did. Perhaps you will.

New_harbour_series_2 The New Harbours Music Series began in April, presented by the Hamilton Artists Inc. Since then, on the second Friday of the month during the ever popular social outing that is James North Art Crawl, experimental music has been tested out inside the church. Past performers include Polmo Polpo, Orphx, Michael Snow and Matthew Boughner.

Tonight, at 9 p.m. listeners and art fans alike can bear witness to out-of-town experimental act Slither perform with local artist Fossils warming up the crowd, free of charge. Attaching live music to the Art Crawl adds yet another medium to the already stellar displays.

You, me and International Skweee makes three

Shm Slow Hand Motëm is known for bringin' the fonk to Hamilton. The gentleman known as Motëm, GBZ, or even Gregg to his friends has dabbled in a style of music without a name in any part of the world. To sum it up, that's what Slow Hand Motëm is.   "Whaaaaa?" you ask. Exactly. That's it.

"We're hosting a Skweee show in a couple weeks" Mr. Motëm informed me a few weeks back. I was baffled with this term. Politely, I nodded, thinking he had said something completely different and changed the subject. I still wondered what I missed in the conversation, because he continued to talk about it. Asking for clarification would have been too simple, I apologize for my ignorance after the fact. Then I found the post online: "Skweee Invasion!". That's the word. Skweee. S-k-triple-e. I was directed to the ever-knowledgeable Wikipedia (this site seems to be a common thread with Slow Hand Motëm, hear: Home Alone). I'm trying to write Skweee for Dummies here. Synths, funkin' bass lines and soulful rhythms pepper the sounds of Skweee.

But Slow Hand Motëm is not a Skwee band. An album called International Skw*** Compilation was released by Skweee label Harmönia in Finland, featuring a SHM tune.

"I think they call Slow Hand Motëm 'Skw***', like on the compilation," explains Motëm, "It's not quite Skweee [explaining the expletive deleted asterisks]. No one around the world knows exactly what to call the Slow Hand Motëm music, which is how I like it."

The connecting factor between Slow Hand Motëm and Skweee is the Funk. The groups pull from inspirations in the funk music genre.

Skweee music bubbled to the surface for Gregg just last summer. After finding out about the obscure music on the internet, he was in contact with Harmönia. "I had never tried to make Skweee music in a contrived way or anything," says Gregg, "It just happened naturally."

So he made his funk, and they made theirs. Until now. A plethora of Skweee bands got a hold of Slow Hand's music and re-re-re-remixed it. So far, Skweee artists Limonious, Mesak and Mrs. Qeada have put their spin on Motëm tunes. This resulted in an upcoming Slow Hand Motëm remix album. The remix album doesn't only feature artists from Northern Europe, though. Local DJ's, MC's and artists have lent their talents to the SHM remixes. That list includes Soundambulist, Riddle Lizard, The Intuitive Hypa, Good Rev Overdrive, Solid DJ Oak and Bocce among many others. The disc is expeceted for the summer, and I'll be sure to let you know exactly when.

Everyone wants a piece of Motëm. Harmonia artist PJVM is set to perform his first Canadian show, with Motëm by his side. This show is happening June 28th. If you're interested contact me here or SHM himself through myspace.
