Hillfield Strathallan Hockey Trojans Travel to Pittsburgh

Early on the morning of March 27th, the Hillfield Trojans hockey team hopped on the bus and headed off to Pittsburgh for a High school hockey tournament including teams from both Canada and USA. There first game was later that night against a fellow Canadian team, the Aylmer Flames.

The black and green jerseys clashed on the ice as the game began. The five-hour bus rides were no match for the spirits of these young Canadians. It was apparent at the start of the game that the OMHA finalist Flames were well prepared. They effectively cycled the puck in the Hillfield end throughout the contest.

The Flames popped in some quick goals early in the first and second periods making it 3-0. This lead lasted until Hillfield’s #13 Jacob Reid was skating the puck over his own blue line when he lost it in his feet. After finding the puck in a midst of two Aylmer players he skated threw the rest of their team and scored. Soon after Jacob scored a second goal for Hillfield and the score was 3-2 going into the third period.

The Flames offense pressed hard on the Hillfield defense and resulted in two more goals. Both goals were cross ice passes to a man in the low slot, which left no chance for Hillfield goaltender Dan West. Aylmer won the game 5-2.

The next day Hillfield had an early game against Archbishop Ryan White of Philadelphia. Having also lost their first game, it was a must win for both teams. It was a solid, even game for the first half of the first period until Hillfield’s Taylor Hanson broke the ice and tipped in a shot from the point to make it 1-0 Hillfield.

Hillfield maintained their lead throughout the rest of the first period and well into the second when Brock Camden scored a breakaway goal assisted by Eric Jackson and Haydon Lutz. In the dying moments of the second period, Ryan White got a quick goal from the slot to make it 2-1.

Both teams were hungry for a win as things got heated between them in the third period, but luckily things didn’t get too far. Hillfield’s Hayden Lutz scored an empty net goal with a minute left from his own blue line to put the game away. Hillfield won the game 3-1.

After watching the Pittsburgh Penguins play the New York Rangers at Mellon arena that afternoon, Hillfield was back on the ice Against the Cleveland Jr. Jacks. Since the Jacks were 2-0-0, and Hillfield was 1-1-0, for Hillfield to advance they would need to win by four because of goal differential. The Jr. Jacks were 2-0-0 for a reason as Hillfield found out as they scored two goals early in the first period. Hillfield woke up soon after and played even for the rest of the first period.

The second period was back and forth until the Jacks broke in and scored a tip in goal from the point. Hillfield realized that their tournament hopes were lost and it was going to be their last game of the season so they left it all on the ice for the rest of the game. Late in the second period Hillfield’s Mike Malott received a cross-ice pass and capitalized on his opportunity to make the game 3-1.

After the final speech of the season between periods, Coach Zelinski showed his Hillfield team wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Hillfield’s Captain Lucas Currah took hold of the game and led the way for a Hillfield comeback. Midway through the third period Lucas skated the puck end to end and put the puck top shelf. Only moments later the Captain struck again with a wrap around goal to tie the game at 3-3. It looked like the game was coming to a close when a Jacks player caught a good bounce and went in one on none against the Hillfield goalie and scored with three seconds left in the game. The final score was 4-3 for Cleveland Junior Jacks.

The first year of the Hillfield Strathallan’s Hockey program was a success: they achieved what they wanted to; the stepping-stones for a team in the future.

Patriots at H.W.I.A.C Badminton Tournament

On Wednesday April 8th, the Patriots travelled to Sherwood Secondary to face off in the Senior East Conference for badminton. Throughout the day, hard games were played during the double elimination process. Many of the players came close to qualifying, including: Obradovic and Dhillion for Men's singles, Kim and Tran for Men's doubles and McEneny and King for mixed doubles. However, Orchard Park's, Dang, took home third place for Ladies' Singles; the Tan sisters finished second in Ladies' Doubles and mixed doubles team, Chen and Danks finished second as well. These three draws will compete in city finals next Thursday at the S.O.S.S.A qualifying rounds.

   

HWCDSB Senior Badminton Championships

Bishop Ryan ties Bishop Tonnos for 3rd place overall.

On Friday, April 3, 2009, the HWCDSB Senior Badminton Championships took place at Dofasco Recreation Center. All Catholic high schools, minus ACMT, took place in the tournament.

Bishop Ryan was well represented at the tournament with athletes in all 5events; men's singles, woman's singles, men's doubles, woman's doubles, and mixed doubles. In this tournament, each player was guaranteed 2 games. During the second round, elimination began.

Several singles, and pairs manage to avoid elimination after the second round of pool play. In woman's doubles, Olivia Jackson/Alicia Piedimonte  and Jacqueline/Felicia DeRubeis continued on. Jackson/Piedimonte were eliminated in quarter finals by Cathedral. On the plus side, the DeRubeis sisters were able to win the consolation finals, giving them a third place finish.

In woman's singles, Jenna Frank made her way to semi-finals, but lost to the last year's champion. Unfortunately, she lost in a three set match in the consolation finals, finishing 4th overall.

Lastly, in mixed doubles, Jason Rieger/Antoinette Clazzer and Jonathan Burshaw/Tiffany Gallant edge their way past elimination. With the luck of the draw however; the two BR pairs ended up facing each other in quarter finals. In a tough match, Burshaw/Gallant came out on top advancing to semi-finals, where they lost.

The pair then played in the consolation finals for third and fourth place. The pair played a great game, and were able to win third place.

The top two from each event (finalists), have advanced to GHAC.

Overall, Cathedral won the tournament undeniably, as many of the finals games were Cathedral vs. Cathedral. St. Thomas More took second place, while Bishop Ryan and Bishop Tonnos tied for third place.

BR Competes at 2009 Hamilton & District Badminton Championships

Bishop Ryan has successful weekend at tournament.

Last weekend, Bishop Ryan send their senior badminton team to compete at the 2009 Hamilton & District Badminton championships, which were held at McMaster University. Despite some tough competition at this all ages tournament, the entire team saw the weekend as a fantastic learning experience.

On Thursday night, Justin Taylor began pool play in men's singles. Taylor was eliminated in quarter final round. Friday night opened up with woman's singles, with three females from Bishop Ryan; Christine Mangubat, Antoinette Clazzer, and Jenna Frank.  

Mangubat faced off against some of the toughest in the tournament, but was able to win one of her three matches 27-25 and 21-18.

During opening round, Clazzer took on Margaret Myjak, one of the favourite to win Woman's A Division singles. Clazzer still put her best foot forward and gave 100% effort in this match. Afterwards, she began to make her mark in C Division, putting up numerous wins with astonishing scores.

Much later in the night, Bishop Ryan learned they didn't have luck on their side in terms on the draw. Clazzer and Frank had both beat out the competition, but would now meet in semi-final action.

Despite this, Bishop Ryan would be guaranteed one finalist in woman singles. Nine points into the first set of their match, Clazzer rolled her ankle. Clazzer was forced to retire the match, and Frank advanced to the finals.

Bright and early on Saturday morning, Bishop Ryan had majority of its team competing in the woman
and men's doubles events. Jacqueline and Felicia DeRubeis won their first match 21-15 and 21-14.
Unfortunately,the sister's struggled through their remaining two matches, resulting in their elimination. 

Clazzer, along with her partner Stephanie Coppolino also 
played woman's doubles, but were eliminated early on. Frank
and her partner Alexandra Hul, struggled in their first game, 
losing 7-21 and 11-21. After this early loss, the two continued
on strong, advancing to C Division semi-finals.  

In men's doubles, Cody Mazza-Anthony and Daniel vanVeen
played tough games all day, but were not able to advance to
playoff action. Daniel Cherubini and Jordan Earl were in the
same position.

Natasha Valconi and Jessica Krizmanic, grade 10 students,
were the success of the doubles pairs. The two may have lost
their first few games, but they pulled their socks up when it
mattered. The two played an intense semi-final game, which
went into three sets, and managed to come out on top: 22-24,
23-21 and 21-18. The pair advanced to D Division Woman's
Doubles Finals.


On Sunday, the last day of the tournament, many mixed doubles pair competed. Cassie McEachern and
Shawn MacLellan put forth good effort throughout the day win a few matches. Tiffany Gallant and
Jonathan Burshaw had a fantastic day, eliminating some tough teams.

Gallant and Burshaw even took on BR's other mixed double pair, composed of Jenna Frank and Coach
Raniero. Gallant/Burshaw won the match, bumping Frank/Raniero to D Division. Unfortunately, both pairs were eliminated in quarter final action in their divisions.  

Sunday afternoon, Valconi, Krizmanic and Frank were all ready for their championship matches to be
played. Just as the matches began the power went out. The championships have been put on hold, and
will be rescheduled sometime in late April/early May.
