Although the sun was shining early Monday morning for these five young men from Orchard Park, the temperature surely proved differently. With the 5-degrees weather forecast and wind-chill that seemed to be below zero, these students still managed to survive through all 18 holes of the course.
As they travelled to Twenty Valley Golf and Country Club located in Grimsby for the SOSSA golf championships, they weren't quite sure what to expect. Last Monday they proved to be one of the most dominant teams in the city, coming in second place. Prodigy Jacob Ohanian shot 1 under par, where Braam Botha shot 78, Cameron Kilpatrick shot 82, Jordan Button shot 87 and Zack Gray shot 88. This tournament was played at Cope Town Woods Golf Club.
This Monday, however, seemed to be an uphill battle for the team. After a tee-off in the cold outdoors, the Patriots team battled for the SOSSA title. Jacob Ohanian proved again his persistency and skill on the course. Though only in grade 11, this young man shot a remarkable 75 which was the second place score of the event. Braam Botha came close at a score of 79, Cameron Kilpatrick at a score of 91, Zack Gray at a score of 96 and Jordan Button at a score of 104.
Unfortunately it wasn't enough for the team to advance but they did take back the experience of being in the SOSSA championships. Grade 10 student Cameron Kilpatrick said: "We played good and there could've been good scores but it just wasn't our day." As golf players know the game is about consistency and patience, it is a very challenging sport to continue successive strokes in; however, these five young men most definately represented Orchard Park well.
