Celtic Slo-Pitch Team On Winning Streak

Bishop Ryan's Girls Slo-Pitch team improves record to 4-1.

On Tuesday, May 26, Bishop Ryan took on Brebeuf.

The entire team exhibited true teamwork and drive. Grade twelve player, Erica Brown, demonstrated homerun potential with her hitting. Brown also had great defense at 3rd base. She is one of several players that makes up BR's strong, mature infield.  

Korinn Daives went three for three with her middle line drives. Grade nine rookie, Heather MacLellan had fantastic defense at short stop.

Marleigh White (left field), Brittanie Smith (center field) and Lisa Mark (right field), BR's key outfield players, had great catches all game. Mark had the all so important game winning catch, out in right field.

With the regular season slowly coming to a close, the Celtics are at the top of the scoreboard with Cathedral. A win against STM this week, in the final game of the season, will secure the Celtics with a first place finish and a buy to the semi-finals.

To date, the team has scored 50 runs.

The final score was 12-8 for BR.

Junior Girls Continue Winning Streak

BR defeats St. Jean de Brebeuf in four sets.

With only two games remaining in regular season, BR's junior girls volleyball team stepped up their game, to improve their standings before playoffs.

The girls may have come out a little too strong in the opening set though. They took a huge lead early on, but then slowly died off as Brebeuf caught up point by point. Eventually, SJB won the set 25-22.

The second set was well played by BR, hungry to win after a close first set. Tia Arcaro, Alex Botelho, Victoria Whalen and Jessica Krizmanic were all powerful from the serving line. Strong serves were the clear difference between winning and losing in this set, as Brebeuf struggled from the serving line. Bishop Ryan took the set comfortably 25-18.

The third set was definitely the most exciting of the game. Straight from the start, both teams were neck and neck. The entire set was literally point for point. Bianca Posteraro and Tori Gardiner contributed six straight serves each.

The game continued to stay tight into the last few points. Finally, both teams reached 25, but in order to win a set, a team must win by 2 points. This tense game continued on, as both sides of the court faced anxiety.

Katie Deck played a great game at the net, both from power and middle positions. She even stepped it up at the serving line, when the pressure was on. Deck served the last three serves of the game, including an ace. Bishop Ryan came out on top 31-29.

After a close set, Bishop Ryan aimed to keep a comfortable lead, in what would hopefully be the last set of the game.

This proved to be true, when Gardiner came out strong at the serving line with eight straight serves, adding a solid lead for BR. Botelho also had some tricks up her sleeve, playing smart at the net during the set. Setter, Whalen contributed with strong, high sets across the entire court.

Bishop Ryan was victorious, winning the set 25-20.

With another win under their belt, the girls hope to improve their standings before playoffs.

Braves Midget Girls Volleyteam has up's and down's

The Saint Jean de Brebeuf Midget Girls volleyball team started their Christmas break off on an excellent note. They defeated the Bishop Ryan Celtics in 4 sets to none.Special mention goes out to Alyssa Mason for serving 14 consecutive aces in the third set. After the braves were down by six points, Masons contribution to the game opened the window for a solid win.
More recently, the girls lost their first game of the season to the Bishop Tonnos Titans after suffering a loss in the fourth set. A great effort was put forth by the Braves, but was  overcome by the Titian's fight for a win.

Senior Girls Volleyball: Bishop Ryan 3, Brebeuf 0

BR wipes Brebeuf in three straight sets in their home gym.

After rebounding from their first loss the day before, BR's senior girls volleyball team was in action again, taking on the Brebeuf Braves yesterday.

In the first set, middle hitters, Felicia DeRubeis and Shelby Keddy displayed their finest skills at the net, with their strong blocking. Both contributed several hits, set from grade twelve setter Tiffany Gallant. The Celtic team won the set with ease.

When second set rolled around, power hitter Raffaella Nocita started the game of with her powerful serves. Nocita served several in a row before Brebeuf could even pass one back over the net. Kristie Crnic also contributed numerous tough serves. 

On Bishop Ryan's side of the net, libero, Erica Brown passed up nearly perfect passes to Gallant, the entire set.

The last set was by far the best one of the game, as BR defeated SJB 25-6, ultimately winning the game.

Brebeuf competes at Wrestling tournaments

The Saint Jean de Brebeuf Braves; participated at the Bishop Ryan wrestling tournament earlier this week, they were represented by Alin Aziz, who placed second to an OFSSA bronze medalist, and Psalm Bautista who finished with a bronze medal.
The wrestling team also attended the  Haldimand classic tournament in Hagersville.  An astonishing twelve people medalled from the Brebeuf by the end of the night. “Most of our success is due to your great coach, and the teams great determination to win and have fun in the process”, said Kevin Jarvis a bronze medallist at the tournament, and a first year member of the team. “I hope the outcome in any future tournaments will be just as good, or even better [than this one]”, he continued 
The next tournament is set for January 9, 2009 in  Hagersville.

Catholic high schools compete in the first swim meet of the year

On Friday November 28th the Catholic high schools in the local district came together at Jimmy Thompson recreation center for the first swim meet of the year.
"There was a lot more people this year then any other year [that] I have seen" said Ariel Tutko, a senior member of the swim team. She is currently off due to a knee injury, and has assumed the position of assistant coach alongside head coach, Mr.R. Pugliese.
Senior team member, Chanesa Ryan, who qualified for OFFSA last year, came first in the 200m freestyle, Justin Morrassutti  placed second in another event, and Adam Perkovic placed first in the 50m breast stroke, as well as first in the 50m freestyle. Other team members placed first in the 50m freestyle, and second in the 50m fly. 
 "There are better teams, and the competition was more intense and harder to keep up [than previous years]" continued Tutko, "But we did it".
This is the first of four meets throughout the year. The next meet is scheduled for December 12th at Jimmy Thompson pool.

Braves win Jr. Boys Volleyball Championship

On Monday night, the junior boys volleyball teams faced off for the city championship game.
The Brebeuf Braves , with an undefeated record, faced the Cardinal Newman  Cardinals with a record of 10-4 ,at the SJB gym.
The game started off as fast paced as ever. Points started accumulating just seconds after the referee blew his whistle. Some simple mistakes were made by Newman, which in return made the first set an easy win for the Braves. 
By the time the second set came , the home stands began to roar, as the Braves kept their lead .
Time continues to tick, and once again the Braves took another lead in the third set. Their  effort  demonstrated skill beyond their years, as well as showing that they have earned their undefeated record, and a spot in the championship game.
The set stays tight. Neither team brakes through the tied slump. Both teams, as well as the stands, begin getting anxious. Time wilts away, and both teams continue to give it their all. The Cardinals fight until the end, but unfortunately do not prevail.
Braves won the game in the first three sets.
Special mention to JohnZimmerman who performed many of the impressive blocks throughout the game. As well as to one of the team captians,  Adrian Swist  who made an outstanding contribution to the game. This is the Braves second championship in a row.

Steel City Miracle continues to get notice

It has already been several days since the semi-final football game at Ivor Wynne stadium.Brebeuf Braves versus Cardinal Newman Cardinals, in a one-on-one showdown for a chance to be in the championship.
All was lost for the Braves until the last play of the game.

With just two seconds left, one of the best plays in high school football was achieved. All the hype since that day still hasn't had a chance to settle down. Between television interviews and replays, newspaper articles, you tube videos, and the over-excitement for the championship game. All has been great at the home of the Braves.
The play that has been deemed at the "Steel City Miracle" consisted of 5 laterals and one pass, giving the braves a one point win, and a one way ticket to the championships.  It started with Kwasi Kwajah passing to Spencer Moore, then a lateral to Joey Cupido who completed a lateral to Kwasi Kwajah, then to Mevand Wassel,  and finally a lateral to Spencer Moore, who finally throws a 25 yard lateral across the field back to Kwasi Kwajah who runs the ball for 35 yards for a touchdown.
This game will go down in history as being the greatest play of all time in Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board  Football.
The Braves meet their cross-mountain rivals; Saint Thomas Moore Knights in the Championship Game at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Friday November 14 at 1:00 PM.

Braves win Quarter-Final game against Gaels

This past Friday Saint Jean de Brebeuf Braves faced the Cathedral Gaels in the Quarter- Final football game at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
The first half left the Gaels down 14-0, in a defensive showdown.  “[This] lead was entirely thanks to our defence” said James Collura, Left Offensive Tackle, and one of the team Capitan’s.   
Joey Cupido had an amazing first half, with a total of three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns.
During the second half, the defence continued with two more interceptions (for a total of five by the end of the game), one of which was made by K.C Cupido, and another by Spencer Moore.
Offence started stepping up their game, with a great effort put forth by Eric Johnson, Mevand Wassel, Marcus Malisa, and Kwasi Kwajah.  
The game ended with a 31-0 win for the braves.
“The defence played extremely well... they kept us in the game. Overall, I am pleased with our effort” explained Head Coach Steve Alfano “But there is more work to be done”.  Brebeuf is set to play the semi-final game this Friday against Cardinal Newman.
