Highland Hawks Dominate the HDCH Knights in Midget Basket Ball

    Most games have a turning point in them. A point where you know how this game is going to end. For this game it was pretty much the opening tipoff as Highland decimated HDCH 35-15. In the game Highland had to bring out blue pinnies due to both teams jerseys looking very similar. In the first quater Highland came out roaring. The pace was end to end but Highland was finishing their chances much better. Highland went on a 6-0 run. The Hawks were scrambling on defence but wthat they missed the Knights gave right back to them. Highland also got nearly all the rebounds.

    The Knight's troubles continued as they just couldn't sink a basket. Highland took TEN fouls in the quater but the Knights couldn't captilize when given these opurtunities. Highland continued to out play HDCH and took the 17-7 lead. The third quater saw Highland comeback stronger. They continued to dominate the flow of the game and by now the Knights looked like a defeated team. The score at the end of the third was 25-11. Highland contined to cruise to a crushing win in the fourth peroid. The game could be summerized in one section where the Knights had 5 shots that should of been in but they missed them all and The Hawks came back to score.

Highland sneaks past arch rival Parkside 2-1

On Monday, Februrary, 23rd the Parkside Panthers battled the Highland Hawks on the ice at J.L. Grightmire Arena. The last meeting between the two teams was a nail bitter with Highland coming out on top 4-2. The same was expected for this one with both teams wanting to win and get bragging rights.

    The first period was an offensive struggle with both goaltenders shuting the door constanly. This was the case until there was 22 seconds left in the period and Dustin Hood for Parkside put the puck in the back of the net off a rebound. This gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead after one.

    In the second period, much like the first, it was a goaltender battle between #38 Josh Hancock for Highland and Parkside's Brendan Bonner. Both goalies faced breakaway attempts, one timers and point shots and stopped all of them. They made it look very easy. However with 25 seconds left in the period with Highland on the powerplay #10 Jordan Hancock shot the puck from the point which got deflected by #54 Derek Searle and got by Bonner for Highland's first goal. This tied the game at one with one period remaining.

    The third period was played at a very high pace with both teams desperately trying to get the go ahead goal but being careful enough to make any mistakes that may lead to giving up the winning goal. This continued for the whole period with both goalies again stopping all the shots they faced until the 2 minute mark. At this point Highland started to put great pressure on Parkside by keeping the puck in the Panthers defensive zone. Then with just over a minute left #34 Nick Weaver passed the puck to his team #13 Sebastien Guastadisegni who crossed ice passed it to #3 Cody Carey who made no mistake of putting the puck into the empty net for the game winning goal.

    With the win Highland's keeps their undefeated season going with a record now of 8-0-4 which has them in first place while Parkside drops to 4-7-1 but still very much alive to make the playoffs. Both teams played an amazing game and should could continue to do so for the rest of the season.

     

Junior Boy's Basketball: Highland beats Parkside 40-38

Hawks win but not by enough to make the playoffs 

On February 5th the Parkside junior basketball team made a trip across Dundas to play the Highland Hawks. This was not only a rivalry game it also was going to determine the 6th and final playoff spot.  

    In the first quarter #1 Mike Barbeau had the hot hand and lead the Highland Hawks with 9 points gave his team a 13-6 lead after the first.

    The second quarter was a close one with #33 Matt Cicuttini for the Parkside Panthers getting his team back into the game by getting a solid 8 points in the quarter. The Panthers outscored the Hawks in the second quarter 14-11 cutting Highland's lead to 4 at halftime.

In the third, Highland controlled the game again and regained the 7 point lead by the end of the quarter. #13 Stuart Hunter for Highland had 5 of the 10 points in the quarter making the score 34-27. This set up a very exciting final eight minutes.

In the fourth, Parkside stormed back with Matt Cicuttini leading the way again. Matt got 5 of the 11 fourth quarter points for Parkside. This strong effort however came up short and Highland won the game by a score of 40-38. Although Parkside lost, they only lost by 2 which was good enough for the Parkside Panthers to make the playoffs.

    Earlier in the year at Parkside the Panthers won by 3. Since the teams split their games head to head, the margin difference is the next playoff procedure giving the Parkside Panthers the final playoff spot.

Leading scorers were Matt Cicuttini who had 17 points for the Panthers while Mike Barbeau for Highland lead his team with 15.

The Parkside Panthers will go on to play MacNab in the playoffs while Highland players will unfortunately have to wait for next year.

Senior Boys Basketball: Highland Crush Vanier 71-56

Highland starters were just too much for Vanier

    On Thursday, December, 4th the Highland Hawks hosted Vanier. In the first right minutes both teams played very well with the home team taking a 20-14 lead at the end of it.

    Then in the second quarter the Highland Hawks starters who had already played the entire 1st quarter completely dominated the play of the first 4 minutes of the second. They convincely out played Vanier at both ends of the court and as a result turned their 20-14 lead to a 40-14. Finally, when Highland removed their starters #52 Chris Nagel, # 32 Tommy Lariviere, #10 Jamie Wilson, #4 Tommy Anderson and #23 Cam Hoernke Vanier finally go their first bucket in the quarter. Highland when into the half in full control with a 45-17 lead.

    To start the 2nd half Highland came back again with their powerful starters and similar to the 2nd quarter completely dominated. The Hawks went on a 9-2 run and shortly the bench players for the Hawks came back on the court to finish what the starting 5 had started. Fortunately for Vanier #3 Amine Tokoub seemed like he could not miss and got 13 points alone in the 3rd which gave Vanier some momentum going into the 4th quarter.

    Unfortuately, Vanier they could not over come the Highland Hawks 63-35 lead and lost 71-56. Amine Tokoub lead Vanier with 24 points while Highland was lead by Chris Nagel and Tommy Anderson who had 20 and 10 points respectively.

    With the win the Highland Hawks improve to 2-3 and will look to extend their winning streak to 3 when the go to Waterdown on Thursday, December, 11th. While for Vanier the lost drops them down to 0-4 and will look to get their first win at Westdale on Tuesday the 9th. 

Senior Boy's Basketball: Highland Sneaks Past Westmount 50-42

    On Tuesday, December, 2nd the Westmount Wildcats travelled to Highland to play the Highland Hawks. The game started off slow for both teams but Highland started hitting more shots than Westmount and took a 15-12 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter was all Highland, with players coming of the bench and scoring 11 of the 15 points in the second quarter while holding Westmount to 8 second quarter points. This made the score at halftime 30-20 in favour of Highland.  With the first half mainly dominated by Highland, it seemed like the Hawks were going to easily get there first win. However the Wildcats looked like a complete different team in the 2nd half and out scored Highland 12-8 in the third quarter closing the lead to only six. This set-up an exciting finish!

    The Wildcats still were on fire and got within in 2 points. However with 2 minutes left #10 Jamie Wilson hit a 3 pointer for Highalnd to give Highland a 5 point lead but after a quick basket by Westmount the lead was down to 3. Then the Hawks came back down the court and got the ball inside to #52 Chris Nagel who got fouled and hit both of his 2 free throws to give the Hawks a 5 point lead again. After the 2nd free throw Westmount brought the ball up to half court only to get the ball stolen by #32 Tommy Lariviere who took the ball in for an uncontested lay up and gave the Hawks a 47-40 lead with 1:18.  This sealed the deal for Hawks first win and went on to add a couple of free throws and win 50-42.

Leading scorers were #54 Julian Felice for Westmount with 17 points while Chris Nagel had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawks. Also for Highland, Jamie Wilson chipped in with 10 points and #20 Jeff Potter had a solid 7 points.   

The lost for Westmount drops them down to 1-2 and are back in action again on the road tomorrow to face Westdale. With the win the Highland Hawks improve to (1-3) and host G.P. Vanier Thursday.                                              

Highland Hawks Win Close One

It had all the markings of a blow-out in the making. Highland escaped a big upset against the Robert Bateman Wild - a team from the Halton school board by winning 44-40 in senior boys basketball. Highland came out flying in the first quarter going up 18-8 and that was only the beginning. By the second quarter Highland was dominating taking a 14 point lead 22-8. That would be Highlands largest lead in the game. The game was a buy-out for the school and many Highland students were in the gymnasium cheering the team on. The Wild were very bad with rebounds during this time letting Highland getting second and third chances. The second quater ended with the score being 29 -- 22

After the half Highland was starting to try to show off, missing two layups that would of been nice but were not needed. It only got worse from there as the Hawks committed 3 straight fouls giving a chance for the Wild to come back. Highland however got back to a better pace and started to put a ton of pressure on the net though the field goal percentage was atrocious they eventually put baskets in and things were looking up again putting up a 35-24 lead.

The Wild then came back with big D, big plays up front while Highland was scrambling on the defence and sputtering on their shots. The wild went on a 13-3 point run making it 38-37 lead for the Hawks. The Wild were playing a very aggressive game often having a cherry picker to receive a long pass. That is the closest the Hawks would get however as the Hawks pulled away 44-40 with two minutes to go and that turned out to be the final score.  Highland's number 52 Nagel scored 15 points, leading the team meanwhile the Wild's DeRoche had 13 points with both player leading their teams.

Junior Boy's Basketball: Westdale crushes Highland 63-38

On Thursday, Novemeber, 27th the Westdale Warriors travelled to Highland Seconday School to play the Hawks. The game had a great and close 1st quarter with Westdale coming on top by a score of 16-13. Unfortunately for the Highland Hawks(0-3) that was going to be the closest they would get to the powerful Warriors team who out scored the Hawks 18-13 in the second quarter, 14-6 in the third and 13-6 in the final eight minutes. This made the final score 63-38 for the Westdale Warriors(2-0).

Westdale was lead by #55 Matthew Smith who had 24 points on the day with 12 of them coming in the second quarter while Highland had strong performances by #5 Eric Benson and  #44 Julian Ambrose who had 6 and 8 points respectively. 

    Next games:Westdale Warriors play at home against H.D.C.H. while the Highland Hawks play at home against Westmount. Both of the games will be played on Tuesday, December, 2nd.

Senior Boy's Basketball: Parkside Wins Big Over Highland

On Thursday the 24th of November the Parkside Panthers(1-0) crushed their arch rivals from Highland 57-31.

    The Panthers were lead by #23 Jeff Hunt who had 15 points including three 3-pointers and #31 Justin Johnson who had 12 points with most of them coming from the free throw line. For the Highland Hawks(0-1) #23 Cam Horneke had a solid defensive game and contributed with 7 points.

 In the first quarter there was great defensively play from both teams but near the end of the quarter the Panthers got their offense going and lead 14-7 after one.

    Then in the 2nd quarter the Panthers took over the game by scoring 25, second quarter points and held the Hawks to just six. The Panthers went into halftime with a comfortable 39-13 lead.

 In the third quarter Highland got some great production from #32 Tommy Lariviere and #43 Sean Collins but unfortunately it wasnt enough to over come the Panthers 26 point lead who ended up increasing their lead to 30 at the end of three.

     In the fourth quarter the Hawks played great and won the quarter 12-8 but it was a little to late and the game ended with a score of 57-31 for the Parkside Panthers.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday, Parkside will look to remain undefeated when they host Westdale while the Highland Hawks go to Ancaster and see if they can go and get their first regular season win.

Junior Boy's Basketball: Parkside edge Highland 41-38

    On Thursday, November 20th the Highland Hawks travelled across Dundas to play their arch rival Parkside. The game ended by a Highland potential tieing three pointer attempt hitting the backboard and falling out. This gave the Parkside Panthers(1-0) the win. Both teams played very well but the difference was the Highland Hawks(0-1) who out shot their opponent they came out on the short end because of the defensive pressure of Parkside.

    In the first quarter the Panthers jumped out to a 11-4 lead but with a few quick adjustments by Highland the Panthers only lead by four at the end of one.

    The second quarter was a great one with back and forth action the entire time which went in the favour of the Hawks by outscoring the Panthers 11-6 in the second making the score 22-21 for Highland at halftime. 

Third quarter was similar to the second but this time the Panthers getting the best of it by winning the quarter 9-8. This made the game tied at 30 setting up an exciting fourth quarter.

    The 4th quarter was nothing but exciting with the teams exchanging baskets unitl Parkside hitting three very free throws which ended up being the difference as the Parkside Panthers won the quarter 11-8 and the game 41-38.

    The Parkside Panthers were lead by #23 Matt Cicuttiniwho had 6 of his 14 points in the 4th while #4 Mike Barbeau and #13 Stuart Hunter had 14 and 7 points respectively for the Hawks. 

    Next week the Parkside Panthers look to stay undefeated when they host Westdale on the 24th while Highland looks to get their first in the win column when they play at Ancaster on Tuesday.

Senior Boy's Exhibition Basketball Game: Highland defeats Hill Park

On Friday, November 14th the Highland Hawks senior boys basketball team defeated the Hill Park Rams 68-44. In the first quarter the hawks came out with a bang by out scoring the rams 17-4. the defensive pressence of #52 Chris Nagel, #23 Cam Horneke and #42 Connor Manson made it hard for the rams offense to get any good shots off. The 2nd quarter was closer but highland out scored hill park 19-14 which made the score at half time 36-18. Then in the third quarter the hawks came out flying and extended their lead to 22. With this 22 point lead going into the 4th quarter it allowed Highland to rest their starters and the players off the bench played well enough to maintain their 22 plus lead and win 68-44.

Chris Nagel lead the hawks in scoring with 25 points. While for Hill Park ##20 Justin Nangel and #31 Doug Rust had good games by getting 8 points each.

Both teams looked good but can definately improve throughout the season. Hill Park's first regular season game is at home vs Orchard Park on Wednesday, November, 19th while Highland plays arch rival Parkside on Thursday, November, 20th.
