Braves win Jr. Boys Volleyball Championship

On Monday night, the junior boys volleyball teams faced off for the city championship game.
The Brebeuf Braves , with an undefeated record, faced the Cardinal Newman  Cardinals with a record of 10-4 ,at the SJB gym.
The game started off as fast paced as ever. Points started accumulating just seconds after the referee blew his whistle. Some simple mistakes were made by Newman, which in return made the first set an easy win for the Braves. 
By the time the second set came , the home stands began to roar, as the Braves kept their lead .
Time continues to tick, and once again the Braves took another lead in the third set. Their  effort  demonstrated skill beyond their years, as well as showing that they have earned their undefeated record, and a spot in the championship game.
The set stays tight. Neither team brakes through the tied slump. Both teams, as well as the stands, begin getting anxious. Time wilts away, and both teams continue to give it their all. The Cardinals fight until the end, but unfortunately do not prevail.
Braves won the game in the first three sets.
Special mention to JohnZimmerman who performed many of the impressive blocks throughout the game. As well as to one of the team captians,  Adrian Swist  who made an outstanding contribution to the game. This is the Braves second championship in a row.

Highland Hawks lose Against HDCH Knights in Volleyball

    The Highland Hawks faced the Hamilton District Christian Highschool (HDCH) Knights in a Junior volleyball game today and the result was the Knights winning 3 sets to 1.

    In the first set the Knights came out swinging and took it 25-15. The Knights throughout the game cheered each other and for most of the game the five players on the bench were louder than the combined crowd of around 30 people watching the last two sets. The stage was set for a slaughter but it was not to be as the Hawks fought back in the second set. Although the Hawks put up a better effort the end result looked the same and the Knights were victorious 25-23. All of a sudden it looked as if the Knights could take the game in a sweep of three sets.

    In the third set the Hawks took an early lead but got three outs in a row to kill any momentum they hoped to gain. This only gave the Knights more encouraged and there cheering grew louder. Eventually however the Highland crowd got a bit into the game and the Hawks, seemingly encouraged by this took a five point lead 15-10. It looked as if the Hawks were getting ready to win the set by a nice margin when the Knights - cheering as always - came back. Ever so slowly the Knights came back to tie it 16 all. Highland became to look deflated and frustrated as they simply could not but the game out of reach. At this point it was neck and neck as the teams never had a lead of more than two points. As it went down to the wire the Hawks came out victorious 25-23 and forced the game to a fourth set.

    The fourth set was a wild one. In the beginning the Hawks looked confident and came out to an early 6-3 lead. Though one of their points came from a HDCH player hitting the roof with the ball. The Knights then battled their way back and it became dead even. Eventually the ceiling came back into play as a Highland hit the ball into it. The battle continued to stay close and the score was tied 12-12. It was around here when the Knights started to turn it up a few notches. The Hawks seemed unconfindent again and the Knights when ahead 17-14. The Highland coach called a time-out in an attempt to turn the tide but it was for naught. Eventually the Knights were up 22-17.  The Hawks however, where down but not out. Highland came back to nearly tie it 24-23 on a nice ace but the Knights won the set and the game 25-23.

Trojans Defeat Saints to Secure Playoff Spot

On a rainy Saturday morning, the St Andrews College Saints of Aurora played Hillfield Strathallan Trojans at Hillfield. Both teams were determined to win because the winner moved on to the playoffs and the loser went home knowing their season was over.

On their home floor, Hillfield got off to an early 9-2 lead. Hillfield’s number 22 Cody Overell sacrificed his body diving across the court numerous times to win some key rallies, Hillfield took the first set 25-11.

The second set proved to be the same, as the Trojans took a 10-2 lead. St Andrews coach gave his team a pep talk and the Saints mounted a comeback with Hillfield leading at 14-12. It was not quite enough as Hillfield took the second set 25-19.

St Andrews was determined not to lose without a fight. The Saints took a 7-2 lead over the Trojans with St Andrews’ number 1 Eric Murkle leading the charge. With some more gravity defying plays and unstoppable serves by team captain Colin Babington, the Trojans forced St Andrews to call a timeout when HSC takes an 8-7 lead.

The game went point for point until it was 17-17. The Saints pulled away to get HSC on edge with a 20-17 lead. When the game got to 23-20 for the Saints, Hillfield’s coach Mark Moore called a timeout. This helped HSC to get within 1 at 24-23.

Felling the pressure, St Andrews called their final timeout of the game. This set could have easily gone either way, but Hillfield came out on top winning 26-24.

As Hillfield’s Colin Babington put it “The first 2 sets were great for us and in the third we had to come back twice, but we did it and it shows what this team is made of.”

Hillfield moves on into the playoffs next week; St. Andrews’ season is over.
