Hamilton has declared that the August civic holiday will be named George Hamilton Day. The military commander and land developer was responsible for establishing this city and lent his name to it. Are you aware of his legacy? Knowing the the civic holiday name was up for grabs, would you have chosen another person to honour?
As part of the Hamilton Clan, as was George Hamilton Im proud that he is finally recognized for his hard work. Let the Lion roar! Now you all have a place to live. How sweet is that.
Kindest regards,
Glenn Hamilton,
Mayoral Candidate

So true Hamilton34. I couldn't agree with you more.

I know "Gene", I shop there too. I'll let you in on a secret. The reason the stuff is so cheap is because it's made by slaves. Maybe not the toy car itself or the hairbrush.. But the plastics or bearings have been made by political dissident slaves!!! Furthermore, the prices have been rising, and products have been shrinking so I can see the endgame. Eventually we may see the competition wiped out and be stuck paying higher and higher prices in this one horse town. I hate dollarama because I'm forced to shop there too. I spare no one in my criticisms, not even myself.

I'm sure if George was here he would be slappin people upside the head for how Hamilton has become.
But we have a chance to possibly change that in the next municipal elections.
According to wikipedia we have the following candidates:
- Mayor Fred Eisenberger
-Former Mayor Larry DiIanni
-Church of the Universe leader Michael Baldasaro
- Activist Mahesh Butani
- Blogger Edward Graydon
- Marijuana activist Andrew Haines
- Property manager Glenn Hamilton
- Joke candidate Marty Zuliniak
Decisions....Descisions..I don't see anyone here who can make the city a better place.

@Give Me Liberty...hey, bro, don't knock Dollarama...great place to get everyday household supplies, gift wrap, socks, office supplies, craft supplies, hardware, soap, kitchenware, etc. etc. all at much lower prices than you'd pay in regular stores.

I heard it was called "Barton" in the past as well. Seeing as Barton Street is the finest of chic areas you can clearly see why this city turned out so suave. I'm off to check out some new fragrances at Dollarama and then review my finances at the Bingo Hall, Ciao.

I sure George wouldn't be to proud,he would likely change his last name.

I hope no members of our current council will be thinking that their performance will make them worthy to be given this distinction some day

I'm going to continue to call it Civic Holiday just as I have since some smart soul decided it was Lord Simcoe Day.

Well George Hamilton founded the city,I would be proud if i founded a city and would probably like a holiday named after me too.Would'nt you?
Posted by: St | July 28, 2010 at 05:25 PM
Well I don't care what they name after him. But SOMETHING should be as he did start up this city and put Hamilton on the map. And as of yet there is nothing named after him in this city. So in my opinion the city needs to wake up and give him that honor.

Why not just keep it as is? Next thing you know Christmas Holidays are going to become Winter Holidays...

Maybe the Juravinskis will kick in a few bucks and get their name on this too.

@Jay, you say "Christ" but he hasn't been around for over 2000 years...why do we still celebrate Christmas & Easter then? Heck, he wasn't even from Canada or Hamilton for that matter! lol
I'll keep my Victoria Day holiday as we get so few in the country as it is!

They should call it George Hamilton Day since the Mayor of Hamilton will not declare it a holiday, saying that retail stores cannot open! Retail workers make up a large portion of employees in Hamilton. Calling it a holiday when there is wide open shopping is a slap in the face. Bring back the Mayors of the Past who declared the Malls and stores could not open on the Civic Holiday.
Give us back our well earned DAY OFF! Most people in Retail work 7 days a week not 5 or 4 like people with REAL JOBS.

I would have gone with Terry Fox day much better then the other one..

I think it is nice to have a name for a day off work/school rather than a "Civic Holiday". It is also interesting to know that August 2nd is closely associated to our great city of Hamilton, itself. Thank you for the info and for the new name.

Unless you are a local history buff, you will not know who George Hamilton was. If I were to take a poll of ten thousand city residents, people would say George Hamilton is the tanned American actor.
Since we rarely teach local history in schools anymore, there is no connection to a single person's name.
It would be more fitting to call it something like Founders Day to celebrate all of the early founders such as Hamilton, Gage, McNab and so on. Many of our surveys are named after early Hamiltonians.

The people who voted for "George Who?" just proved why we need this day.
About time we start giving a nod to Hamilton history.
Christ, we still celebrate the queen's birthday, and she is totally irrelevant.

I think its a great idea, we should name it every year after someone local. At least it wasn't the queen or one of her merry band of idiots, ya know they wanted to. We name way too many things in this country after those rich imbeciles, leaving out our real homegrown heroes.

George Hamilton is the person the day should be named for...civic holiday...civic founder. Makes perfect sense.

See that naming rights are for sale in Hamilton, what would it cost to buy the name of the city? Maybe the outstanding balance to build a stadium.
