This week in Parliament, the government and opposition parties will square off over an attempt by the Tories to kill the long-gun registry. But the majority of Liberals, NDP and the Bloc want amendments made as opposed to killing it entirely. What do you think?
The registry is idiotic! Most gun owners have ignored it and in my contacts with the PM and leaders of the opposition parties my request for evidence that the registry had prevented a single crime went unanswered. The major opposition parties, as always simply quote the "Chiefs of Police' support etc. but never state any evidence-based value. It is an expensive, useless excercise in gun control signifying nothing!

Just as a side note; How many of the killers on our streets across this country have Registered Guns? Long Guns or not.
It is a proper requirement to know who owns a legitimate gun but don't pound an over-kill of registration in the name of justifying a Department run by friends and family of those of influence. Put the money into stopping illegal firearms and building 'Tent City' jails for those who use such arms.
To me this Registry is no different than having a vehicle registered by it's License Plate, which is done at the present time, and then registering each tire, radio, CD's and tapes inside, tire jacks, ---- and you get the rest of the picture.

What's really REALLY! funny is that when people speak against the Registry its only using facts that the CONservative government spills out to spin a topic to their benefit.....Can you say Sheeple?

To Ernest. Why do you WANT to read a news story where a hunting rifle is used in the commission of a crime?
Do you really think that every farmer with a gun is going to rise up in rebellion every time the government "gains access to total control of the population"?
That any system will be a cock-up because the government is doing it is really nothing new. but its the price of a democracy. Or we could give it to our corporate friends to do? (think 407)
Its a royal pain to meet the criterion for registering a rifle or a revolver. Suck it up. Who knows ernie, maybe the reason you have not read about gangs roaming the streets with rifles is because we control guns somewhat.

You obviously misread all of my sarcasm in my message.
obviously there is no "fix" as everyone already knows at this point, it was a simple jab at the futility of the entire debacle to this point.
The registry and any other means of control only hampers the people who are following the laws and this is how it's always been and will stay.
There is only one way to fix the issue with illegal guns and that is to hold an amnesty day to collect all "illegally" held weapons and either have them registered or collected for destruction. Immediately following the amnesty is a country wide open search warrant for all house holds across the country for those "suspected areas" that are known for gun crimes to harvest the rest of the problem weapons.
Then to cap it off re-instatement of the death penalty for anyone using a gun in any crime to drive the point home.
Until measures like these are taken nothing will change, the only thing this will do is impose more user fee's and harder access for those using guns for their proper intentions.

Dave, do you really think criminals are going down to the local gun shop to buy their guns and ammo?????
Taking ammo out of gun shops is only going to stop target practice and hunting, that is all.
As for your brilliant "kill the killers until everyone is dead" idea.... wow...... have fun with that.

Caroline, the gun registry and licensing are 2 separate things! We havea licensing program that works great, and through that, we already have a list of every licensed firearms owner in Canada. Why would we then need to spend an additional 3 billion to register each gun individially, when we already know who has them???

Kill the killers till everyone is dead!
problem solved no people no need for guns to kill the ones left!
go mother nature go!
how about just making gun manufaturing illegal and stop the problem at the source (shrugs might work better)
oh wait wait wait i got it the entire solution completly fixed right here...
take all ammunition outta the gun shops and make it a crown corp institution and make all the bullets registered! hmmmmmmmm

WAKE UP PEOPLE>>>hunters, sportsmen and properly trained LEGAL owners of firearms are not the criminals here....the majority of illegal firearms' usage comes from criminals who DONT register their guns or knives...or drugs...or prostitutes...nor anything else illegal they are doing!!!!
The government is wasting your tax dollars on this stupid issue when they should be spending it the justice system, putting more police officers on the street, the Armed Forces...or hmmmm...heres a thought...feeding the starving legal tax paying Canadians in this country instead.
Gun registry is just like referendums...a waste of my tax dollars.

I am happy that the long-gun registry continues to exist. How can licensing firearms be an abuse of power? Not to license all fire-arms is a shirking of power. FIY, hunters do kill people.

the best way to protect the safety of the public is to spend less money on this nonsense and more on actually punishing criminals who use guns. Until we take these thugs off the streets when they get caught we won't be safe

If I remember when the gun registry came into effect it ended up costing taxpayers 1 Billion dollars.Way over the cost that was told to the public. At that time it was illegal to bring handguns into Canada.Handguns ie..pistols were illegal in canada.you were required to have an FAC (fire arms aquisition certificate) to own/purchase a firearm in canada.I for 1 want to read a news story from the past 10 years were a hunting rifle (registered/stolen or not)was used in the commision of a crime.
The gun registry is a flagerent abuse of power to disarm the public allowing the government to gain access to total control of the population without fear of reprisal.

I do not agree with the current long gun registry that being said tougher hand gun regulations and stiffer penalities for those that commit a crime using a firearm should be implemented. Hunters do not kill people
